Active Remediation > F.A.P. Plus™
|
|
Applications:
Recovery of hydrocarbon liquids (LNAPL), such as
gasoline, diesel fuel, hydraulic fluids and up to #6
heating oils.

The patented F.A.P.™ (Flexible Axial
Peristaltic) Pump is an automated skimming
system for free product recovery from 2 inch or larger
wells. The standard system is designed to recover light
end hydrocarbons with SSU Values of 80 or lower, these
include gasoline, jet fuels and most diesel fuels.
For applications recovering products with higher
viscosities, the F.A.P. Plus™ may be used with our high
viscosity rod skimmers or our density skimmers. |
Description
The F.A.P. Plus™ Pump system is comprised of six main
components:
- F.A.P. Plus™ Pump
- Skimmer Assembly
- Well Clincher
- Pneumatic Overfill Protection Device
- Filter/Regulator Assembly
- Electric Air Compressor
The F.A.P. Plus™ Pump consists of a flexible, inner
bladder and a flexible Buna-N® hose which forms the
outer bladder. It features an integral controller which
uses adjustable micro-pneumatic circuitry to control the
pulsing of the pump bladder. The controller is factory
preset for 15 cycles per minute. While this is suitable
for most application, the cycle time can be adjusted
depending on the amount of product present or the
viscosity of the product.
The pump operates by alternately inflating and
deflating the annular space between the inner bladder
and the outer hose. When compressed air is applied, the
inner bladder collapses. When the air is exhausted, the
inner bladder rebounds to its original shape, this in
turn causes a suction which pulls fluid into the pump.
The pump is capable of producing a suction of 17 in. of
mercury. When air pressure is applied again, a check
valve at the bottom of the pump closes. As the inner
bladder is compressed, the contained fluid opens a
second check valve at the top of the pump and the fluid
is directed to the surface.
The F.A.P. Plus™ can operate dry or in the coiled
position without damage and may be installed at the
surface in shallow well applications.

Standard Skimmer (TR-517)
The standard skimmer is attached to the lower end of the
F.A.P. Plus™ Pump and is used to recover gasoline, jet
fuel and most diesel fuels. The High Viscosity Rod
Skimmers or Density Skimmers are used to recover higher
viscosity products such as heating and crude oils. The
Skimmer can also be configured as a passive device by
attaching a quick connect canister onto the bottom of
the Skimmer, providing greater flexibility for free
product recovery projects. (see Passive Skimmer)
The Skimmer consists of a combined
density float, hydrophobic element, product bypass,
hollow guide rod and a coiled hose. The skimmer is
designed to float with the inlet positioned at the
water/product interface. At the center of the float is
the intake comprising a hydrophobic element that allows
only hydrocarbon liquids to pass through. The
hydrophobic element uses a special micron pore size
element that is based on surface tension, allowing only
product to pass. A larger, micron pore size is available
for use with higher viscosity products such as weathered
diesel. The larger micron sized elements may allow a
small percentage of water to pass. Should these elements
become fouled they are easily cleaned with a brush or
they can be replaced.
The float is centered on the hollow
stainless steel support rod with clearance allowing it
to move freely up and down the rod in response to ground
water fluctuations. The element of the float is
connected to the bottom of the rod by a coiled
polyurethane hose. This coiled hose can accommodate
changes of up to 36 in. (0.91m) in water level,
automatically maintaining the skimmer intake at the
water/product interface. A minimum of 24 in. (0.6m) of
water is required when using the TR-517 to allow the
skimmer to float freely. The TR-51718 requires a minimum
of 18 in. of water and provides 18 in. of travel.
Density Skimmers can be used at sites with less than 18
in. (0.45m) of fluid.

High Viscosity Skimmer
The
4 in. high viscosity skimmer uses the same design as the
TR-517 less the hydrophobic and bypass element. This
skimmer is used when the product has a viscosity higher
than 80 SSU, such as oils. The skimmer has a 30'' travel
and a specific gravity of 0.95, allowing it to float at
the product/water interface. The product collects at the
top of the skimmer inlet and then is pulled by the pump
through the coiled hose and then transferred to the
surface. In normal applications the skimmer will remove
the product layer 1/4'' to 1/2''. The skimmer can be
adjusted in the field to further remove the product
layer.

Density Skimmers
Density
Skimmers are used when there is less than 18 inches of
fluid to the product water interface. The skimmers have
a specific gravity of 0.95 and float in the water with
the top inlet just above the product/water interface. A
coiled hose attached to the top of the skimmer allows it
to automatically adjust to water table changes up to 24
inches (61cm). There are four sizes of Density Skimmers,
allowing use in several applications. The 2 in. and 4
in. (5.1 and 10.2cm) sizes are for use in well casings
with these nominal inside diameters. The 6 in. and 12
in. (15.2 and 30.5cm) models are self-supporting and may
be used in large diameter wells, open excavations and
open water applications.

Well Clincher
The Well Clincher or cap has expandable, pass through
fittings for the air supply tube and product discharge
hose, allowing the pump depth to be easily adjusted. The
Well Clincher fits over and seals the casing to prevent
foreign materials entering the well. Standard sizes
available for 2 in. to 8 in. well casings, custom sizes
available upon request.

Filter/Regulator
The 5 micron coalescing and auto-drain device is used to
filter compressed air to operate the pump. An element
indicator provides a visual indication when the filter
elements need to be serviced. The regulator allows the
pump operating pressure to be set according to the depth
of the pump.

Overfill Protection Device
The Pneumatic Overfill Protection Device is a safety mechanism used to
guard against the overfilling of the product storage
tank. The device is installed between the air source and
the Filter/Regulator. When the tank is nearly full, the
Overfill Protection Device shuts off the air supply to
the F.A.P. Plus™ Pump deactivating the System. The
pneumatic overfill device senses a differential pressure
that activates the shut off valve to the air supply.
After the storage tank has been emptied and the manual
restart button has been depressed, the Pneumatic
Overfill Protection Device reactivates the System. The
standard pneumatic overfill can be used with up to three
F.A.P. Plus™ pumps. The TR-75711 is used with more than
three systems.

Air
Supply Shut Off
This Electro-Pneumatic Device uses an intrinsically safe
float sensor to shut off the air supply to the pump. It
is fitted with a programmable 24 hour timer to allow
intermittent system operation. “On” and “Off” times can
be programmed in 15 minute increments. It requires 110
Volts (ac) for operation.

Hoses
The standard hoses for the FAP Plus system are
1/4 inch polyethylene tubing from the outlet side of
the filter/regulator to the pump and 3/8 inch Buna-N
discharge hose. The air inlet side of the
filter/regulator and the hose connections for the
overfill protection device are 3/8 inch barb fittings,
optional quick connect fittings are available. The hose
sizes may have to be upgraded in size depending on the
distances between the system components. |
High Water Shut Off
This option can be added to the Rod Skimmers. It is used
when the water table changes are expected to exceed the
travel of the skimmer. It prevents the skimmer from
recovering water. When the skimmer reaches its upper
travel limit and is submerged in water, the pneumatic
logic shuts down the pump and will restart the pump when
the skimmer returns to its normal operating position.

Air Compressor
An electric, non explosion-proof 2.5 HP (1.9kW),
indoor-use air compressor producing 6 scfm is supplied
with the standard FAP Plus system. It can power up to
three FAP Plus pumps. A 5 HP compressor is available for
when more than three pumps are used.
Membrane Air Dryer
The FAP Plus pump requires relatively dry air for
optimum performance. If the Durham Geo air compressor is
not used, it is important to include a 5 micron
coalescing air filter in the system, especially in
freezing or high humidity conditions.
